They say travel is good for the soul. Discovering new and unfamiliar surrounds, experiencing different cultures and meeting new people are just some of the reasons why Australians choose to dream big and travel overseas or within our laidback-loving land.

Whether it’s a beach holiday inclusive of sun, sand and a cocktail in hand, or an adventure-packed escape. There’s one thing that’s for sure when it comes to dreaming up that idyllic holiday—it looks different for everyone.

With that in mind, we take a look at four very unique dream holidays with four vastly different groups of travellers who are each seeking a travel experience that is truly unforgettable.

AN ITALIAN SUMMER

Who doesn’t dream of spending a summer in Italy eating copious amounts of fresh pizza and pasta and lying on the beaches of the Cinque Terre? Tahlia Fiedler and her young family certainly did, and their Italian holiday was anything but forgettable.

Discover…

  • The art and architecture in Florence, by visiting the Duomo, Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture at the Galleria dell'Accademia.
  • The five villages that make up the Cinque Terra along the Riviera coastline. Riomaggiore, the biggest of the five villages and arguably the most beautiful, is jam-packed with family-friendly things to do, see and eat.

While travelling with a toddler may be some people’s idea of a bad nightmare, Tahlia shares her tips for doing it with ease:

  • Firstly, invest in both a lightweight and compactable travel pram and baby carrier that can fit as hand luggage.
  • Pack wisely and ensure you’ve got the flight covered with some new toys that haven’t been played with yet, these are perfect for keeping little ones entertained onboard.
  • Lastly, while night flights can be more expensive, it can be worth making the investment for the pure fact that a sleeping child is a blessing for everybody on board.

DISCOVER YOUR OWN BACK YARD

While it’s easy to overlook the beauty of your own backyard, this isolated island state off Australia’s south coast is indeed the place postcards are made of.

These days a holiday to Tasmania can include everything from boutique accommodation and shopping, to a food and drink scene. Then of course there’s its long list of outdoor options that span the length of the coastline all the way to the mountaintops.

This choice of holiday undoubtedly offers the best of both worlds, as discovered by Casey Eveleigh and her partner as they embarked on a romantic couples trip around the seemingly small but mighty Australian state. Here are their unforgettable tips.

  • Adventure to Freycinet National Park on the east coast of Tasmania where the options for thrill seeking and nature-loving are endless. Take a photo with the local wallabies before hiking the 50-minute route to the Wineglass Bay lookout. Once finished, head down to the bay to visit its turquoise waters, perfect for swimming, kayaking, diving and fishing. Choose to camp out for the night or if coastal luxury is more your thing book a night at Freycinet Lodge in one of their coastal pods featuring waterfront views, an outdoor spa and floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Get a good night's sleep and enjoy the serene coastline at Piermont Retreat, located just south of Swansea. This sanctuary is framed by wild forest and white sandy beaches and offers everything from an outdoor pool, tennis court, kayaks and maintain biking, to its Homestead Restaurant featuring the freshest of local produce.
  • Book in a penguin tour in the seaside town of Bicheno as well as carving out time to see the blowhole in all its (watery) glory.

FAMILY FUN BY THE BEACH

Clear blue waters, beachfront accommodation and outdoor activities for both the adults and kids alike is exactly what April Callan, her husband and three kids are after when booking their family trips away. So much so, their last three holidays have included the sun-drenched shores of Koh Mak in Thailand, the Maldives and Mystery Island in New Caledonia.

With waterfalls, waterslides and making memories at the top of the agenda, April shares her insights into their most beloved beachside escapes, as well as why showing her kids the world is so important.

Discover…

  • The relatively small and peaceful island of Koh Mak in Thailand has something to offer every family, young and old. Swim and snorkel in Ko Kham, just a short distance from the island, or rent a rod from the pier at Cococape, pick your spot on the dock and fish away. It’ll keep the kids busy for hours.
  • Experience indulgence in the Maldives at The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Hotel, a 5-star luxury beach oasis where the kids will be kept busy with water sports, nature trails and even mini golf.
  • Go cruising on the Royal Caribbean and be sure to stop off at Mystery Island in New Caledonia for the paddle boarding, beach massage huts and local village markets.

If you’re still not convinced that travelling with kids is an experience you want to withstand, April’s reasons for why she does it might just change your mind.

  • To immerse them in other cultures and educate them on history.
  • To expose them to lives of both poverty and luxury.
  • And lastly, to make memories with them that they will cherish forever.
